What Is Open Rhinoplasty?

Because it allows the surgeon to view the internal structure of the nose directly and manipulate the cartilage freely, it is well suited to cases where a significant change to the shape of the nose is desired.

Does Open Rhinoplasty Leave a Scar?

Because the columella is incised, a small scar may result. In the past, many patients avoided open surgery out of concern about scarring, but nowadays some patients choose to accept this degree of scarring in order to achieve a more substantial change to the shape of the nose. The extent of scarring and the course of recovery vary by individual.

When Is the Open Technique Considered?

If the existing shape of the nose is already in good condition, there is generally no need for open surgery. However, if the goal is an overall change to the shape of the nose, open rhinoplasty may be considered, since its wider range of cartilage manipulation allows for more detailed correction. The most appropriate technique depends on each individual's nasal condition, so it is best to decide through a consultation.

Can a Bulbous Nose Also Be Corrected with the Open Technique?

For a bulbous nose caused by splayed nasal cartilage, correction can be attempted through an open approach that brings the cartilage together. In addition, when the tip needs to be raised significantly, ear cartilage is sometimes grafted between the tip cartilages to build up additional height.

What's the Difference Between the Closed and Open Techniques?

Closed rhinoplasty involves an incision only inside the nostrils, so there is little visible scarring, but the extent of correction is more limited. Open rhinoplasty, on the other hand, involves an incision on the columella that may leave a small scar, but its broader range of cartilage manipulation allows for a more substantial change in shape. Which approach is right for you depends on the degree of change you want and your current nasal structure.
